Hello, y’all.
If you’re like me, you don’t enjoy being talked down to, especially by someone who thinks that speaking or acting in a certain way will help him or her to fit in with you and your fellow natives. Those of us who live in Texas and haven’t spent our entire lives living in some big cities have a phrase for those we see and hear who try to fit into a culture they’ve never been a part of: Dime store cowboy or cowgirl. We see them. They show up at a rodeo with fancy new clothes and boots they just bought at Cavender’s, doing their best to fit in, putting on a really bad Texas accent. They’re there to see and be seen, whereas the rest of us are just there for the show. They’re posers, and we laugh at them, because we see the complete lack of authenticity.
But we’ve all seen that fake “trying to pretend I’m one of you” routine from politicians for years. Like this one from Hillary a few years ago:
Or this one from Cackles last year during a speech in Atlanta:
And just so no one thinks I’m picking on the ladies, here’s one of Joey trying on a Southern twang at an event honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. (audio only):
Which brings me to Jasmine Crockett, the Texas embarrassment. It pains me to no end that she represents my state, but at least she’s far away from me, so I don’t have to worry about accidently bumping into her.
I honestly don’t understand this woman, nor what her motivations are. I’ve heard numerous pundits discussing her actual upbringing and contrasting that environment with how she presents herself these days. If you’re not familiar with her background, here’s a rundown of who she was and where she attended school before she landed in the House of Representatives:
Crockett’s parents are Joseph and Gwen Crockett. Her father was a teacher and a preacher, while her mother was a lifelong employee of the US Postal Service. Not overwhelmingly wealthy but likely made a comfortable living.
Attended Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School—Cost of tuition for the 2024-25 school year varies based on age but ranges from $25K to $34K. I’m sure it’s increased since she attended, but you get the picture that it’s not cheap.
Crockett attended Rosati-Kain High School, another private school, with annual tuition running around $11K per year. Both the Mary Institute and Rosati-Kain are run by the Catholic Church. Never having been around Catholic nun schoolteachers, I can’t speak from actual experience, but I imagine their reputations of not taking any crap off the students or having them act uncultured is fairly accurate.
She attended college at Rhodes College, average tuition for the current school year is running around $54K.
She obtained her law degree courtesy of the University of Houston.
Now, none of this is to draw a line making a claim that she didn’t deserve these opportunities. If she did well in school, was raised right by her parents, and was able to attend these schools through the financial aid system, then good for her that she had the opportunity to do so.
But the line I am drawing is that she was in an environment in her formative and later years that carried and preached a certain amount of decorum. An environment that likely emphasized that if she wanted to be taken seriously, she needed to act the part of a professional woman based on her education and environment. And being in that kind of immersive environment would have likely rubbed off on her.
However, as we’ve come to see of Crockett of late, every time she speaks, she becomes shriller and more unprofessional, and I’m trying not to sound racist when I say this, attempting to portray herself as being a reflection of the South Dallas area she represents by the way of her speech and behavior. Below is a before and after video of her:
So, she can switch it on and off.
Now, many years ago, I worked at a fire department that is in her current district, and the city was predominantly black. Didn’t bother me in the least, that’s just the way the population happened to shake out. The Dallas area was at the time (and remains so today) predominantly white on the north side and predominantly minority on the south side. And I will be honest, and again, not attempting to be racist in any way, but there were minority residents who did talk the way she attempts to talk. North side of Dallas County and parts of the middle are upper and middle class; either with or without parental help and/or financial aid, children could likely afford to go to the types of schools that Crockett attended. Southern Dallas County residents, not so much. It would have taken financial aid to make that happen, and if they were able to achieve that with financial aid, then good for them, they deserve it.
But this is what annoys me, and it all comes back to the accent. Crockett doesn’t talk like she’s a native of South Dallas when she’s not in South Dallas or in front of a camera. She puts on a fake performance for those that she thinks will fall for her act. And honestly, knowing her background, her upbringing, her education level, all of those things that would be the mark of a professional woman, if I was a resident of her district and she came in talking to me that way, my question would be “Does she really think we all sound like that? Is that what she thinks of us?” I personally would find it insulting. What does she think she’s gaining by this fake personality and this fake way of speaking? Does she really think that makes her more relatable because of how she tries to come across, when it really just reinforces her inauthenticity?
And maybe that’s why there’s been so much national love for a man like President Trump, and why he so soundly won re-election last year. Because Trump, despite his sometimes-rough edges, is genuine; what you see is what you get. The actual speech may vary a little in terms of what he says, but the same tone of voice, the same mannerisms, the same way of speaking, will be the same whether Trump is speaking to a crowd in Texas, Minnesota, New York or California. There’s no forced fake accent or attempting to be something he’s not and never has been. He doesn’t insult us by thinking we’re stupid enough to fall for some fake act he wants to put on. Trump is the real deal, not some dime store cowboy. He’s authentic. And that’s why the Democrats hate him, because the best they can do is hope their fancy new duds from Cavender’s will fool the voters into thinking that they’re one of them.
P.S. I’m not knocking Cavender’s, they have some very nice quality products, I’m just using them as an example of a place that posers can find their costumes at me.
Thanks for reading.
I am gonna age myself but they used to be called Rexall Rangers back in the day. Sorry she is a clown along with Al Green from your state. I have had issues the some other Congress clowns as well Mr Costa from California wanted to shake my hand at a Veteran function and I told him to pound sand. He was PO'ed.
Crockett is a clown with her thick makeup, including tarantula eyelashes, and fake accent so she will never gain higher office. What professional women in higher office do we see that look or act or sound like her? She's an embarrassment to all professional women of color. We could be as profane as we wanted in the military (constantly), but in civilian life, I had to learn to bite my tongue off at the root when speaking. If I slipped up a bit, I just blamed it on my "Army upbringing" and I'd see smiles from most people. Crockett has no filter and no excuse. She'll be gone from public viewing in a few years, one way or another. A political opponent could run videos of her two facades and wipe the floor with her.
